Super cool piece—it reminds me that I need to re-operationalize a process that I have learned (on vacation!) is held together through assumption and twine.

This is a perfect training ground for resurrecting these work simplification methods.

The thing I struggle with most, in reading your work, is how to apply these insights to my own field (research). There is little systemic classification or understanding, and to some extent it may simply not be possible.

Yeah, that is the rub. This works for well defined processes, but what about very nonstandardized or minimally legible processes? That's where you need to talk about organizational culture, I think. One thing I'd like to stress more: this WWII era aimed to foster a culture of process improvement. That's also where technocrats of the 60s went wrong—they doubled down on the "process improvement" through abstract cost-benefit analysis, when the cultural angle was just as important.

In any event, if you figure it out how to apply these ideas to research, feel free to pitch me a guest article!
